The American Press - The opioid addiction raging through the country has definitely made its way into Louisiana, and the most vulnerable among us are its victims. The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reported the number of newborns exposed to alcohol and drug abuse has almost tripled over an eight-year period.
Although opioids account for most of the increase, they aren’t the only drugs involved. The state Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) said in 2008 hospitals reported 569 newborns with drugs or alcohol in their systems. That number increased to 1,659 in 2016.
